The project is part of a highway extension linking the existing Banyan Drive to a jetty for petroleum-carrying vessels. The proposed highway is 39m wide' 1.5km long and with a 20m wide service corridor. The site is located on Jurong Island' a 3'200 ha man-made island joined by several smaller islands through land reclamation. Vibro compaction is proposed to improve the current existing reclaimed sandfill which is up to a depth of 32m.
Challenges include vibro compaction near the VLCC (Very Large Crude-oil Carrier) twin pipeline. An instrumentation trial was carried out to measure displacements and vibrations such that effects due to vibro compaction was be ascertained.
A total of 160'000 square meters of ground' to an average depth of 28m' was improved using 5 Vibro Compaction rigs. A twin-probe system was also adopted for this project.
