The development of Resorts World at Sentosa Integrated Resort requires the widening of existing Artillery Avenue in Sentosa Island. Part of the roadworks requires the formation of slopes near an existing traffic roundabout.
The soil conditions at the site shows 5m to 12m thick soft clayey silt (SPT N values varying 1 to 6) below ground level. This is followed by very stiff to hard clayey silt.
Deep Soil Mixing was proposed to improve the soft soils to increase the slope stability against failure under normal traffic loads. The Deep Soil Mixing treatment also acts to reduce earth pressure acting on a retaining wall in front of the treatment area.
The Deep Soil Mixing works was carried out using single shaft mounted on a Soilmec R618. Treatment was carried to the firm soil layer and column lengths vary from 5m to 12m in an area of approximately 300m2. Unconfined Compressive Strength tests on cored samples show that strength more than the required minimum strength of 1,000kPa.
